TBW and Character Education
The Becket Way
The Becket Way is our set of principles, rooted in our mission statement, that every Becket School student is encouraged to embody. These principles guide our conduct and ensure we reflect the values of our Catholic identity in all that we do. They include:
- Our Mission and Values: We are called to live out the Gospel values, demonstrating love, kindness, and integrity.
- Character and Habits: Developing habits that foster good character, including perseverance, compassion, and self-discipline.
- Routines and Expectations: Following routines that support a respectful and purposeful learning environment.
- Community and Collective Responsibility: Understanding our role in building a school community based on mutual respect, care, and responsibility.
- Kindness and Gratitude: Practicing kindness towards others and gratitude for the blessings we receive.
- Emotional Resilience: Learning to manage our emotions constructively and demonstrating empathy toward others.
- Effective Communication: Using language that uplifts others and fosters understanding.
- Diversity and Inclusion: Embracing diversity and treating everyone with dignity, as we are all made in God’s image.
At the start of the academic year, our Year 7 students receive a dedicated timetable to understand these expectations, supported by form tutors, senior leaders, and our chaplaincy team. We revisit these principles at the start of each half-term through Becket Way assemblies, ensuring all year groups remain aligned with our mission.
Catholic Character Education
At The Becket School, we are committed to forming the whole person, nurturing both faith in unison with academic achievement. We aim for our students to become global citizens, guided by their Catholic values and a desire to serve others. Our Catholic Character Education program blends our Catholic identity with the necessary life skills and virtues for moral living in today’s world.
Each year, students focus on specific virtues appropriate to their stage in school:
- Year 7 – Faith, Charity, Hope: Embracing Faith in God, showing Charity through acts of kindness, and living with Hope in God’s promises for the future.
- Year 8 – Temperance: Developing self-control and balance to make thoughtful decisions that honour God and respect others.
- Year 9 – Prudence: Learning to make wise and careful choices by seeking God’s guidance and discerning what is right.
- Year 10 – Justice: Understanding the importance of fairness, equality, and acting in ways that uphold the dignity of all people.
- Year 11 – Fortitude: Building resilience and courage to face challenges with strength, rooted in faith and trust in God.
